Welcome Summer

Constance Spry with Princess Alexandra (fg)
Everything’s coming up roses, especially as we have had so little rain, we must have tens of thousands of roses out already. In this strange summer we have been having.

Pink is the strongest colour this week, the ever-reliable Gertrude Jekyll, Louis Odier, a pretty spray rose with many heads, Princess Alexandra – a real cyclamen shocking pink for lovers of Schiaparelli, then St Swithuns and Liliana, both delicate pale peach roses and out at the moment are two of the once-flowering varieties, Constance Spry and the opulent Charles de Mills –a deep dark purplish red with tiny tight buds opening into a rich rosette. So, plenty of choice!

There is a good choice of cream and ivory too with Susan, Winchester Cathedral, Mythos and pure white Iceberg all blooming now. For posy foliage we have honeysuckle, alchemilla and there will soon be sweet peas. For gold roses there is a strong showing of Golden Celebration and Graham Thomas.
